The free game is one grid a day plus recent archive games. Pro removes both limits: play as many extra grids as you want, and open any day from the full archive.
That’s the whole pitch. Whether it’s worth it depends on what kind of solver you are.
Unlimited extra grids. On-demand puzzles beyond the daily one, generated whenever you want. Same format, same rarity scoring.
The full archive. Free covers roughly the last couple of weeks. Pro opens everything: go back to a specific date, replay a grid your friend won’t stop talking about, or just binge a rainy Sunday.
Cloud sync and backup. Your streak and history survive a new phone. Unremarkable until the day you need it.
Everything else, no ads, hints, sharing, is identical. Pro doesn’t make the daily grid easier or give you free hints. It gives you more grids.
One-a-day people: probably not. If the daily ritual is the point, coffee, grid, done, Pro adds little. The free grid plus recent archive is plenty.
Bingers and travellers: yes. If you regularly finish the daily and want another, or you’re facing a long flight, unlimited grids pay for themselves fast. Same if you missed weeks and want to play through what you skipped.
Students of the game: yes. The archive is the best training tool in the app. Replay a month of grids with a notebook open and you’ll notice patterns: which journeymen recur, which eras keep appearing, where your blind spots are (everyone has a league they know least).
Don’t just mash through extra grids. Two approaches work well:
Theme sessions. Pick a weakness, say Bundesliga players or pre-2010 eras, and play five archive grids in a row focusing only on those squares. Use hints freely on them; you’re studying, not performing.
Daily plus one. Solve the daily clean, then immediately play one extra grid where you deliberately pick rare answers you’d never risk on the daily. It trains the journeyman reflex without endangering the streak mood.
And the unglamorous tip: subscribe annually if you play most days, monthly if you’re testing the habit. Check the Pro screen in the app for current prices, they beat the price of one stadium beer, but still, match the plan to the habit.
Does Pro make the daily grid different in any way? No. The daily grid, its clues, and its rarity scoring are identical for free and Pro users. Pro only adds extra grids and archive access on top.
Can I try Pro and cancel if it’s not for me? Yes, Pro is a standard subscription managed through your app store account, so you can cancel at any time and keep free access to the daily grid.
Is the archive the same puzzles for everyone, or randomized? The archive holds the actual daily grids from past dates, so every Pro user sees the same puzzle for a given day, just like the daily grid itself.
Love the daily and want more of it? Pro is more of it. Happy with one puzzle a day? Stay free, the game isn’t holding anything back to pressure you. Tap the Pro badge in the app whenever you’re curious.
