That’s not a coincidence. The whole genre traces back to one baseball site, and football just happens to be the version built for people who don’t know an ERA from an RBI.

Where the format actually came from

A developer named Brian Minter built the original Immaculate Grid as a side project in early 2023, a daily baseball trivia game with a 3x3 grid of MLB clues. It grew from a few dozen daily players to over a hundred thousand within months, entirely through word of mouth, before Sports Reference bought it that July and started building versions for other sports.

What carries over to football

The core mechanic is untouched, and for good reason, it’s the part that made the format catch on in the first place:

• A 3x3 grid, nine squares, one player per square.
• Each square needs a player who satisfies both the row clue and the column clue.
• A rarity percentage on every correct answer, rewarding the name fewer other solvers thought of.
• One new grid a day, so there’s a shared puzzle everyone’s comparing notes on.

What’s different about the football version

Football’s structure forces a few changes baseball never needed:

League replaces “team era.” Baseball clues lean on decades-long franchise history. Football adds league as its own clue type (Premier League, Serie A, and so on) because players move between competitions constantly, and a club’s league itself can change through relegation and promotion.

Nationality does more work. International call-ups matter more in football’s daily conversation than they do in baseball, so nationality squares show up constantly, often crossed with a club to create the loan-and-journeyman puzzles the format is known for.

No “which stat leader” squares. Baseball versions sometimes ask for a specific statistical leader in a season. Football grids stick to club, league, nationality, era, and position, since football’s record books are less standardized across leagues than baseball’s.
